Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize ... She was not selected.

This is the ninth time - including three exhibition games and two playoff games - that Hasselbeck has opposed his friend and teacher since Hasselbeck was traded from Green Bay to Seattle in 2001. Favre was 32 then.

Now he's 40, beginning his 20th season and making his 2010 home debut for Minnesota weeks after staving off retirement one more time.

"And good for him," Hasselbeck said. "Good for them. They had a great year last year. It makes it a lot tougher in the NFC. All the teams in the NFC, it's not good for us.

"Yeah, it's all right. I don't have to play against him. I'll let (Seahawks rookie safety) Earl Thomas worry about that."

Hasselbeck has enough to worry about.

Coach Pete Carroll said he is preparing to have his quarterback, who has had a bad back and broken ribs in the last two seasons, join fellow starters in playing three quarters against Minnesota's formidable pass rush.

"Matt's going to play into the second half. That's what the plan is," Carroll said.

That's despite injuries that have ransacked the left side of the offensive line. The last time he played an exhibition in Minnesota, two summers ago, Hasselbeck grabbed his back in pain while chased by sack master Jared Allen.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.- Rich Seubert is the starting left guard on the Giants' offensive line. But because his broken left arm has been in a cast, the team's doctors have not allowed him to play in either of the first two preseason games.

Saturday at Baltimore, Mr. Seubert was finally supposed to get in a game, at left guard. Then the doctors put center Shaun O'Hara's foot temporarily in a cast and Mr. Seubert was told he could play, but he'd have to slide over and man Mr. O'Hara's position.

"Obviously, I could probably run faster than Rich even with the cast on," Mr. O'Hara said.

As the Giants ready for their Sept. 12 regular-season opener against the Carolina Panthers, the theme of their preseason has been injuries. No unit has been unscathed and the entire offense has been disrupted. But when it comes to all the shuffling that's taken place on the offensive line, the inconveniences have been met with selflessness.

Take what happened when Mr. Seubert first went down: Left tackle David Diehl was moved in to the Mr. Seubert's left guard spot. A left tackle guards the quarterback's blind side and Mr. Diehl, who has been the Giants' left tackle since their 2007 Super Bowl-winning season and went to the Pro Bowl last year, stands to lose $1 million if he plays another position.

But in he went to left guard for two games, losing valuable repetitions-and leaving room for the second-year left tackle William Beatty to potentially shine. "Sure it's a little frustrating at times, but part of being a team player is moving," Mr. Diehl said. "It's a team game."

Mr. Diehl played guard when he first came to the Giants seven years ago, so the position wasn't foreign to him, but he laughed at the suggestion that the technique for one spot comes right back. Guard is a much more physical spot, he said, where a player comes in contact with his opposing defensive tackle immediately. An offensive tackle has to work in space, against a speed guy, which requires a much more controlled form of aggression.

This week, in going from guard to center, Mr. Seubert is going through another sort of upending-one in which he'll have to snap the ball and direct the movement of the entire offensive line-an entirely different role with its own set of mental and physical demands.

As the Giants' longest-tenured player, Mr. Seubert was a target of speculation this preseason about his hold on the guard position. The Giants even signed former Pro Bowl right guard Shawn Andrews last week-and are playing him at left guard.

Mr. Seubert's wanderings may not last long: Coach Tom Coughlin said he'd likely only ask Mr. Seubert to play center against the Ravens. But the veteran isn't fazed in the least.

"Playing in a game is playing in a game. It's blocking a guy, right?" he said. "It doesn't matter if you're playing guard or center or tackle, you're still blocking somebody."

Ultimately, Giants linemen have to think that way. when asked if his linemen had the option to protest a change in role, Mr. Coughlin looked almost confused. "No, that's not the way it works," he said, explaining that the Giants demand flexibility and versatility from linemen.

For his part, Mr. Diehl, the left tackle, will still finally get to play at left tackle this weekend. His relief was palpable and he admitted to being excited to getting back to his comfort zone.

So far the Giants say there's nothing to read into Mr. Seubert replacing Mr. O'Hara at center-as opposed to the team's younger backup center, Adam Koets. The team maintains that Mr. O'Hara's cast is only there to force him to rest a foot with tendinitis before the rigors of the regular season.

Either way, Mr. O'Hara knows these next five days with the cast won't be pleasurable. "Not being with the rest of the line is always the toughest part," he said. "They let you know about it every minute of the way."
